RAMBLES WITH HISTORY IN MIND

Over the last few years the History Group have organised an Annual Ramble, usually starting from the

Woodgate Valley Country Park Visitor Centre.

We have produced booklets to accompany these rambles as follows:-

2002 - £1 A History of Woodgate Valley

An updated version of the previous' years Ramble with lots more information.  Written more of a fact sheet than a Ramble;  great map on the back with names of fields.

2002 - £1 A Walk through Woodgate

This ramble takes you for a walk around the old hamlets of Woodgate and Moor Street, packed with information, it is a leisurely walk that takes about an hour.

2003 - £2 Walking part of the Manor of Northfield

This walk follows part of the boundary walk undertaken by Square Ledsam, Lord of the Manor of Northfield and Weoley 1863.  This starts down at Stonehouse bridge, takes you through the Country Park and over the motorway bridge to Lye Close Lane/Farm following the boundary stones.  There are some great pictures in this booklet, it is easy to follow, a good leisurely walk about 2 and a half  hours long;  that is without stopping for refreshments at the Visitor Centre and looking at our latest display.

2004 - £2 A Walk along the Line of the Lapal Tunnel

We follow the line of the Lapal Tunnel from the Visitor Centre down to Stonehouse Lane; this walk follows the spoil heaps along the line of the Lapal Tunnel.  Half of the walk is in the Country Park and the other half follows the spoil heaps through Woodgate Valley estate.  The walk takes about an hour and a half one way, with directions on how to return to the Visitor Centre.  Great map of spoil heaps on the back.

2005 - £2 Along the line of the Lapal Tunnel to its Western Portal and Beyond

This walk starts at the Visitor Centre and continues down Lapal Lane South and finished at the Black Horse, Manor Way.  This is a great walk, which ends up at a pub, what could be better!  It is packed with historical information.  It takes you from the Visitor Centre, over the motorway bridge in Carters Lane, across the fields, crossing over Lapal Lane South, across a few stiles (not recommended for the less able), then past the old fish ponds and Halesowen Abbey and on to the Black Horse.
